This documentary poem, Norway's submission for the 2024 Oscars, is both an epic visual experience and a delicate reflection on our relationship with nature, the bonds between parents and children, and the beauty of life itself. From the very first frame of an elderly man walking alone across the untouched snow of a Norwegian valley, we feel that Margreth Olin is inviting us on an extraordinary journey. This man is 84-year-old Jørgen, the director's father, who has spent his life studying Norway's wilderness and often took his daughter on hikes. Songs of Earth is the longest of these journeys: an energetic explorer with two walking sticks in hand, Jørgen leads us through the mountainous terrain surrounding his hometown, welcoming us to accompany him through all four seasons. Alongside Jørgen, we will walk among glaciers, waterfalls, and fjords, with the film also incorporating his stories of a 55-year marriage with his wife Magnhild, their shared joys of life, and their philosophical anticipation of death.
