35-year-old Ralph (Toms Auniņš from "Troubled Minds") is in a happy relationship with his new girlfriend—except her teenage son Karlis isn't exactly eager to accept Ralph as a father figure. To strengthen his bond with the boy, Ralph takes him on a trip down the rivers of Latvia. Joining them on the yellow banana-shaped boat is Linard, the fussy colleague of the main character. The rafting trip, planned to be calm and bonding, gradually takes unexpected turns—especially since each member of this odd trio has their own idea of what makes a great adventure. This low-budget tragicomedy, shot over four years at natural locations in northwest Latvia, follows the best traditions of American indie cinema. The movie turns out to be a moderately funny and somewhat instructive story about how the toughest period of growing up for boys begins closer to forty. "Banana Boat" is based on the personal story of the director Kristaps Brize, who, with his wife, director Ieva Ozoliņa, is raising three children from her first marriage.
